Amazon has expanded its free same-day delivery service to 11 more cities across the U.S. Now Amazon Prime members can access the free same-day delivery service across 27 metro areas on qualifying orders over $35. Prime users that order in the morning before noon will have their packages delivered by about 9PM seven days a week.
The 11 cities that were added are: Charlotte, North Carolina; Cincinnati, Ohio; Fresno, California; Louisville, Kentucky; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Nashville, Tennessee; Raleigh, North Carolina; Richmond, Virginia; Sacramento, California; Stockton, California; and Tucson, Arizona.
“Prime was developed to make shopping on Amazon fast and convenient, and millions of members have used Prime FREE Same-Day Delivery to make their lives even easier,” said Amazon Vice President of Prime Greg Greeley in a statement. “We keep making Prime better, and as our operational capabilities grow, we will continue to invent and expand delivery options that customers love.”
There are more than a million eligible items available for Prime’s free same-day delivery such as consumer electronics, toys, games, tools, etc. Prime users have ordered millions of essentials for the spring and summer seasons. For example, Amazon said Prime members have ordered enough camping chairs to seat 77 baseball teams around a campfire and enough beach towels to line Santa Monica beach twice since the program launched. Some of the most popular items ordered using Prime free same-day delivery this spring are the Amazon Fire 7” tablet and the Fitbit Activity Wristband.
Initially, Amazon offered the same-day delivery service for an additional fee of $5.99 in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York City. The additional fee was dropped last year.
Another rapid delivery service that the Seattle-based Internet retail giant offers to customers is Prime Now. Prime Now allows users to shop for tens of thousands of essentials and gift items through its native mobile apps and have it delivered within two hours. Prime Now also supports restaurant deliveries.
Amazon’s same-day delivery competes against the likes of on-demand delivery networks like UberRUSH and Postmates. Amazon Prime is also fending off competition from Walmart’s “ShippingPass” — which offers free three-day shipping for a subscription cost of $50 per year.
The Amazon Prime subscription costs $99 per year for standard accounts and about half that amount for students. Amazon Prime offers free two-day shipping for more than 30 million items. Other services included with a Prime account includes Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Photos and access to the Kindle Owners’ Lending Library.
